NIS DG Attends Italian Consulate U-20 Football Tournament Opening in Lagos
The Director-General of the National Institute for Sports joined diplomats, federation officials and stakeholders at the opening of the Italian Consulate U-20 Football Tournament in Lagos.

The Director-General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), H.E. Rt. Hon. Comdr. Philip Shaibu, joined diplomats, football stakeholders, sports administrators and coaches at the opening ceremony of the Italian Consulate U-20 Football Tournament held in Lagos.
The tournament, organised in partnership with the Italian Consulate General in Lagos, brings together U-20 sides drawn from clubs and academies across the country in a week-long competition aimed at strengthening grassroots football and deepening Nigeria-Italy sporting cooperation.
In his goodwill remarks, the Director-General commended the Consulate for using sport as a platform for youth development and international friendship, noting that competitions of this kind give NIS-trained coaches and scouts an opportunity to identify and track emerging talent in a structured environment.
He reiterated the Institute's openness to collaborating with foreign missions, federations and private partners on technical clinics, coach education and athlete welfare programmes — areas in which NIS has more than five decades of accumulated expertise.
The tournament will run across selected Lagos venues and culminates in a final weekend that will feature technical seminars and a closing reception with Consulate officials, the Lagos State Sports Commission and visiting Italian coaching staff.
